Yeah, not a tv show couple. It still counts.
Wyoming, 1963. Two cowboys fall in love. It scares them both shitless - which is perfectly understandable, because how are they supposed to know what this *thing* between them really is? They are left to figure it out on their own. No role models, no knowledge of what homo/bisexuality is, no *nothing*.
Jack is the one of them who seems to be more at peace with himself out of the two, but Ennis won't grab the chances he gets offered to build some kind of life together with Jack while the years pass: because being with another man is exactly the same thing as signing your own death certificate in his head.
And you know what? Unfortunately, there are still places in the world where being together with somebody of the same sex *is* signing your own death certificate. Homophobia still thrives in this world. Ennis wasn't wrong in being scared - he was simply confronted with the shit we *still* have to deal with to this day, like a thousand other gay men, a thousand other lesbians, a thousand other bisexuals have and will have to.
.... I just wanted those two cowboys to be happy together, dammit. :(
